On Thursday’s episode of Lorraine, Dr Alex George shared his appreciation for Covid vaccine creators Professor Sarah Green and Dr Catherine Green in a heartwarming segment.

The former Love Island star is an A&E doctor at Lewisham and Greenwich Hospital in South London and has helped to treat patients battling Covid-19 since last March.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly, Sarah and Dr Catherine were on the show to discuss the process behind creating the vaccine.

For years, Sarah had been working on vaccines that before she moved on to figuring out how to develop technology to respond to future pandemics.

Dr Catherine’s team at Oxford University made the very first batch of ‘high-quality medicine’ for clinical trials.

Lorraine and Dr Alex had both been ‘excited’ to meet the pair, and sure enough, Dr Alex was in awe of the scientists.

‘I wouldn’t often say this but I am star struck. What you have done, you have saved millions of lives,’ he said on the morning programme.

‘I was thinking about what I would say to you really and when we were in the first wave and I was in Lewisham.’

The A&E doctor said he and his colleagues, and we were overawed with the number of patients they were seeing, and how he couldn’t see a light at the end of the tunnel.

‘I honestly thought “are we ever getting out of this? Is this what we have to face forever?”,’ Dr Alex explained.

‘When your trial results and the initial data came out, that feeling of hope and “oh my gosh, we can actually get out of this mess” was unbelievable and I’m just so grateful.

‘From everyone in the NHS and for vulnerable people out there who can now go and see their family’s, thank you, you are heroes, you really are.’

Lorraine echoed his sentiments and the crew gave a large round of applause to say thank you.

This sweet moment comes after Dr Alex opened up about the harsh reality of working on the frontline earlier this year.

Previously he spoke to Lorraine about the effects the surge in Covid cases are having on the hospital staff, with many NHS staff left traumatised by the first wave.

He said at the time: ‘I try to be as honest as I can Lorraine and it’s the worst we have seen. It is really tough at the moment.’

Lorraine airs 9am weekdays on ITV.
